Altair was a bit of a quiet one.

The purple-furred Braixen certainly seemed content to walk alongside his trainer, sharp eyes picking out movement in nearby brush and large ears twitching, but there was also an evident distance to the Pokemon.

Orion suspects it's been hurt before — by a trainer, no doubt. Not for the first time, he wishes he could communicate properly with his companions. All this would be so much easier if he could just ask them what was wrong.

In absence of that, they walk the Safari together.

They aren't alone: Orion's Type: Null plods behind them, a looming and silent shadow. After the events of the New Years attacks, Orion was vying even harder to understand his chimera. Perhaps if it witnessed the ranger's kindness toward others...

"I'm glad you decided to trust me," he says, and knows the Braixen is listening when its ears twitch in response. "I won't let you down, Al."

Orion's always liked cats. His Liepard wasn't much for the ranger lifestyle, but where he'd normally find a more suitable home for such a Pokemon, he was content to keep her around as a housecat. She liked to steal all of his spots: his favourite armchair, his pillow, his seat out of the four dining chairs...

So when he spots a Meowstic, male according to its colouring, his smile is gentle.

"Hey, buddy."

It purrs and approaches the trio, extending its paw as if it's offering to shake. Orion's quietly delighted, more than willing to comply... but the Meowstic fakes him out at the last second, snatching its paw back and covering its mouth with a snicker.

It was a bit of a prankster, apparently.

He's not upset, laughing along with the psychic feline. "Ah, you got me."

It seems to take a liking to him, and the casual way that he'd dealt with its harmless fun. It follows them when they set off down the path once more, and when he offers it one of the four safari balls he'd been given, it takes it delicately in its paws.

Orion almost doesn't see the Budew in his path, small as it was. It's the scattering of life dew that alerts him to the little bud's presence, and he's jolted uncomfortably back to the night of the new year.

Droplets had fallen like rain over a charred and broken battlefield. He still has nightmares about it.

It's Altair who jolts him out of it, the gentle tap of the Braixen's branch against his arm. He glances at his Pokemon in surprise, sees something like understanding in its gaze. His lip twitches, and he nods.

"Let me move you off of the path, little buddy..."

He relocates the Budew to a small pond a little ways off, not wanting the dual-type to get stepped on as it almost had.

To his knowledge, Woobat spend a great deal of their lives in caves. He's surprised, then, to see one out in the open.

Its supersonic emissions seem to aggravate Braixen's sensitive ears: they flick and twitch, but the dual-type offers the fluffy bat no aggression in response.

It bumps into Orion, who chuckles.

"Sorry, pal, am I in the way?"

It squeaks at the sound of his voice, then latches onto his arm with its nose. The ranger shakes his head, amused, and gives the fluffy creature a pat. He palms a safari ball in his hand, tapping the Woobat with it.

Had he not already fallen in love with the fluffball the moment he'd laid eyes on it, the Eevee's baby doll eyes might have sealed the deal.

It doesn't seem aggressive, fluffy tail curled around its body as it cants his head and watches Orion and his Pokemon. Type: Null, in particular, seems to take an interest in the creature; Orion stiffens, cautious, as the towering creature took several steps toward the normal-type.

He considers ordering the Null to pull back, but it's Altair who stops him. The dual-type meets his trainer's gaze and shakes his head, wind ruffling his ear-fur with the motion.

Orion hesitates, then nods.

Type: Null bends its neck, heavy with the obstructive helmet, and sniffs curiously at the Eevee. It mustn't anticipate any sign of danger, for it simply touches its nose to the chimera and offers a little chirp. The Null grunts in response, sound muted by its helmet, then tucks its legs beneath it and lays down in the grass. The Eevee surprises Orion by clambering onto the strange Pokemon's back and curling into the nook between its shoulders. For all its emotions were impossible to read, Nulls posture suggested that it didn't mind.

Friends, then...?

Orion's so wrapped up in watching Eevee and Type: Null interact that he doesn't even notice the Snom as the ice-scaled larvae inched across the ground nearby.

Altair, most perceptive of the group, watches the little bug before it succeeds in its slow-going race to cross the path without being stepped on. The Braixen spins his flaming branch idly between his paws as he waits for his trainer to get a move on, taking the lead at the front of their rag-tag band when at last the Type: Null gets to its paws, balancing a dozing Eevee between its shoulder blades with a great deal of care.

It's a touching sight, and Orion smiles at the duo before they move on.

Orion has never seen, nor heard of Applin before. Spotting what he thinks to be someone's discarded lunch — there are no apple trees nearby it could have dropped from — the ranger in him sighs and bends down to pick it up, intending to dispose of it. He didn't know if the tree it had come from had been treated with pesticides, or if the apple contained some sort of contaminant unsafe for the safari Pokemon, so it was better safe than sorry.

He nearly has a heart attack, however, when the apple squeals and wriggles in his grip.

"Ah — what the—?"

He drops it in shock, his Braixen reaching out to catch it with excellent reflexes. Altair seems more amused than anything, setting the apple down in the grass. What Orion had thought were leaves quickly retreat inside of the fruit.

"Sorry, buddy, didn't mean to give you a fright."

They move on, the ranger shaking his head all the while. Must be another one of those Galarian Pokemon.

The next Pokemon to cross their path does so on dainty paws, twin tails flicking in unison. It's not to Orion but to his Braixen that she directs her attention: judging by the end result of their conversation, in which they took up positions a reasonable space apart, the competitive feline wished to test her mettle against Altair.

Their sparring session starts off in Meowstic's favour: she lunges forward only to fake out her opponent, causing Altair's will-o-wisp to flare harmlessly past. Not to be bested, Altair's clever use of magic coat sees its negative effects reflected back upon the Meowstic; his psyshock rattles her hard, the graceful feline wavering on her paws.

A second attempt to fake out the Braixen ends in failure, but a barrage of shadow balls is sure to see one land. Braixen recoils, and Orion wonders if he's hurt... but the glow that surrounds him is not like any attack he's ever known. A startled Meowstic finds herself face-to-face with the newly-evolved Delphox, the determined dual-type spinning his flaming stick around in his paws.

Meowstic chirps something and dips her head, apparently ending the fight before curling up to groom herself.

"Guess you won," Orion mumbles to Altair, astounded.

When he looks over to see the white-furred cat dozing off, he tosses his last Safari ball. He had a feeling she'd get along with his other newly acquired cat.
